Before I began, I would like to say that I wrote this for people who one day may consider it or have questions not at all to make those who do not to be belittled! So, with that being said lets get started! A lot of people have misconceptions about homeschooling simply because its not ” the norm”. I was homeschooled for four years {2017-2022} and I know families who have homeschooled for 18+ so I can asnwer a lot of questions and feel free to ask.
Lets Begin with the 4 major misconceptions:
- Homeschooling is expensive
- No one homeschools
- Kids will be antisocial
1.This is one of the biggest misconceptions that people believe about homeschooling is that its to expensive. There are actually a handful of COMPLETELY FREE online homeschool resources.
- Easypeasyallinonehomeschool {Christian}
- Freedom Homeschooling {Christian}
- Discovery K12 {Secular}
- Khan Academy {Secular}
- Ambleside Online {Christian}
2. I absolutely love when someone says this. Automatically I pull up National Home Education Research Institute statistics. NHERI reported that “There were about 3.1 million homeschool students in 2021-2022 in grades K-12 in the United States. There were about 2.5 million homeschool students in spring 2019 (or 3% to 4% of school-age children) [note 1]. The homeschool population had been growing at an estimated 2% to 8% per annum over the past several years”. So, homeschool is actually growing therefore not only is the misconception that no one homeschools false, but the amount is actually growing.
3. The most aggravating of all miss conceptions is that your kid will be antisocial. Your kid being antisocial lies on your shoulders as the parent. My siblings and I as well as our neighbors’ kids are pretty social people. One of them actually owns a candle making business as a fifteen-year-old. It is really just how you choose to let them interact with others. CO-OPs are a great option for your children to have a more social outlook. you can find them online through websites and Facebook groups. Go try different ones out! But here are some statistics just in case your still on the edge! Here is more statitics fro NHERI “Research facts on homeschooling show that the home-educated are doing well, typically above average, on measures of social, emotional, and psychological development. Research measures include peer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem.87% of peer-reviewed studies on social, emotional, and psychological development show homeschool students perform statistically significantly better than those in conventional schools (Ray, 2017).
Thats my spill on the 3 most common misconceptions. Here are some pros to homeschooling that I 100% agree with.
- Freedom
- Flexibility
- Strong Relationships
- Individualized Education
- Non-stressful environment
Some questions I got asked a lot being a homeschooled kid are:
- Do you feel you learned more at public school or Homeschool? HOMESCHOOL, because I could do schoolwork at any point in the day and there weren’t any distractions. (yes, there was younger siblings, but you could simply go outside to the porch to do your homework if need be lol.
- Did you take lots of breaks? I mean we would take an occasional day of the week to go on a hike but made up for it on Saturday so no not really. Its really about how you plan out the school year!
- Do you want to homeschool your future kids? A hundred times yes!! Life happens sometimes but if I am able yes, I will 100%.
- Should all kids be homeschooled? This is a big question for homeschooled parents and that’s a no. Some kids just do better in public school and that’s okay!
I am going to end by saying do your research! See if homeschool works for you and if it doesn’t that is fine! Also just because a friend uses a certain curriculum does not mean that you have to use it. Try out different curriculums have fun.
